Jackson Mthembu and other senior ANC leaders who called recently for a leadership change in the party failed to grab an opportunity to do so on Thursday, opting instead to shoot down a motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma. Two weeks ago Mthembu came out of the closet, telling the country he disliked the direction the party was taking. He went even further and called for the resignation of the party’s entire national executive committee. But he seems, since then, to have mellowed and failed to walk the talk. His office made it clear on Wednesday that ANC parliamentarians would not back the motion. Motions of no confidence by the DA had "become ritualistic practices founded on spurious allegations and narrow political motives rather than substance", he said.
